Don’t put this bottle in my hand, cause the second you turn it will be gone
and this pressure is killing me and these lectures are of broken dreams
but i subside you weren’t the coward that died cause you weren’t the villain this time cause i lied
I lie awake thinking of you…
Wake up! Wake up! cause you’ve got a hold on me and i cant stand it so just give it back for one second, look.
Staring into your eyes and looking down at the ring it hurts me inside
to know ill never get her back i hate the fucking fact that you’re growing up and I’m stuck in quicksand
Here’s my last attempt to tell you that
I lie awake thinking of you…
Wake up! Wake up! cause you’ve got a hold on me and i cant stand it so just give it back for one second, look.
If we fall, we fall together even if its out of love
sincere apologies will always get the best of me
Wake up! Wake up! cause you’ve got a hold on me and i cant stand it so just give it back for one second, look

Smalls’ latest EP, “Expecting The Worst,” is upbeat pop punk that’s the ultimate soundtrack to a summer with your friends. The melodies are enough to draw you in, but the alternating in male & female vocals is what keeps you listening all the way through. You can name your own price for “Expecting the Worst” on Bandcamp or catch Smalls on the road with Firestarter & Old Again from now until 2/23.

What’s your hometown (or what are your hometowns)?
We are scattered throughout the Los Angeles area in southern California.

How did the band come together? How long has it been?
Billy and I (Ashley) started writing songs a few years ago and never really had luck getting dedicated people. Russ’ band broke up and he started filling in, he liked it so much that he decided to stay. Russ recruited Brittney (they were both in a band called Lessons) and we found Gus through mutual friends who told us Gus liked the EP and was looking for a band.  In my opinion, this band was never a band until July of 2013 when we played our first show together with this lineup.

How have you grown since you started?
It’s been gradual. We went from this being Billy and I, to having Russ join, and then Britt and Gus. Having a final solid lineup has helped us be more in tune with each other as musicians. The songs sound way more solid live. We don’t have to scramble trying to find someone to fill in, teaching them the songs and so on. Now we’ve started to dabble in the writing process with everyone and things sound like they’re going to take a huge step forward without losing ourselves/sound.

What sets you apart from other bands?
If I’m being blunt, we are a pop punk band with a girl singer that doesn’t sound like Paramore or We Are The In Crowd. It kind of bums me out because when we first started a lot of people wrote us off because they saw a girl singer and thought “just another band that sounds like Paramore”. I like these bands, but I take a lot of influence from early 2000s pop punk such as Homegrown, New Years Day and Tsunami Bomb.

What’s the best part about being in your band?
Getting to play shows, interacting with people who genuinely come out to see us, and having someone actually care you’re playing. Also, I like having a platform to say what I feel and to know that they listen (most of the time) and can take something from it.

More times than not, influences tend to bleed through. What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
It’s a mix…a lot of old 90s skate-punk/early 2000s pop punk mixed with newer bands. Personally, I listen to a lot of different bands like Best Coast, Lifetime, The Movielife, The Smoking Popes. Billy and Russell are a bit older so they bring their NOFX, MxPx, The Ataris, Lagwagon, Saves the Day, Fat Wreck/Epithaph influences. Brittney and Gus listen to the Starting line and Bayside, and we all listen to newer bands as well like The Wonder Years, Mixtapes, and Such Gold.

What would you say the band has already accomplished and what do you have your eyes set on next?
We have been fortunate enough to catch a small bit of attention; we want more people to hear us.  We just finished recording a new EP that’s set for a spring release on Negative Progression records. We have our eyes set on getting out on the road. We have a couple things up our sleeves.

touchdown:

stability. you’re open I’m closed & broken, change the words that come out of your mouth the shit you’re saying doesn’t make any sense

when all you have is combat it gives no room to come back, isolated child no one hears your cry.

believe me, I’m lying when i tell you you’re the one i want forever & ever

tragedy. it breaks when monogamy’s faked out loud, so try me again cause the lists are the next trend of things that are soon to come

when all you have is combat it gives no room to come back, isolated child no one hears your cry.

believe me, I’m lying when i tell you you’re the one i want forever & ever

turn you’re back on the friends that you made & the hearts that you break i should never had stayed.

the eye:
its coming from my mind and not my soul
we need to find a cure to growing old, before I’m too old.
its coming from my mind and not my heart
I feel like moving on is just the start of something new for me and you
hate me one more time baby I’ll make you mine by the end of the night,
by the end of the night
its coming from my mind and not my soul
i wish it wasn’t there cause i want more
I’ll always want more
its coming from my heart but i still try
i swear i have the dreams about the eye but i still try, but i still try
hate me one more time baby i’ll make you mine by the end of the night,
by the end of the night
